La Asamblea General de la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT) decidió en septiembre de 1979 instituir, a partir de 1980, el Día Mundial del Turismo, que se conmemora el 27 de septiembre de cada año, con relevantes actos sobre temas que selecciona la Asamblea General de la OMT .
La principal finalidad del Día Mundial del Turismo es fomentar el conocimiento entre la comunidad internacional de la importancia del turismo y sus valores sociales, culturales, políticos y económicos.
La fecha del Día Mundial del Turismo resulta especialmente adecuada, porque corresponde al final de la temporada turística alta del hemisferio norte y al comienzo de esa temporada en el hemisferios sur, cuando el turismo es tema de actualidad para miles de personas de todo el mundo.
En Benidorm esta fiesta comenzará a las 13.00h., con la elaboración de varias paellas gigantes en varios escenarios de la playa de levante y playa de Poniente, según se detalla.
1.- Rincón de Loix cerca del Burger King, a las 13.00h. se elaborará una paella gigante para mil personas, por cortesía de la Asociación de Campings de Benidorm.
2.- En C/Mallorca entre las calles, Ibiza y Gerona, a las 13.00 h. elaboración de una paella gigante para mil personas, por cortesía de Los Disco/Pubs de la zona.
3.- C/Bilbao, a las 13.00 h. elaboración de una paella gigante para mil personas, por cortesía de Aptur y Disco pubs de la playa.
4.- Paseo de Colon, a las 13.00 h. elaboración de una paella gigante para mil personas, por cortesía de Hosbec, Asociación Hotelera de la costa Blanca.
La fiesta seguirá a partir de las 18.00 h., con un desfile multicolor que partirá desde el Hotel Cimbel por el paseo de la playa de Levante, pasando por la calle Bilbao, Avda. mediterráneo, Plza. de la Hispanidad y el Pont, hacia la Plza. de SS.MM. los reyes de España, donde tendrá lugar un espectáculo de equilibrio, “desafío en el cielo”. Seguido de una actuación musical LOW COST FESTIVAL con grupos de Pop y Rock, en la Plza. de SS.MM. los Reyes de España. El espectáculo musical finalizará sobre las 22.00 h. aproximadamente, siendo este el final de la celebración del día Mundial del Turismo.
